HIGHLIGHTS OF CANOLA DISEASE SURVEY IN EAST-CENTRAL ND
A canola disease survey was conducted by the NDSU Extension
Service in 39 swathed fields in Stutsman, Eddy, Foster, Wells and Sheridan
counties during August 15-21. Fields were selected at random for the survey.
Some fields were treated with fungicides. Field incidence of sclerotinia
(white mold), based on examining 40 stems/field, ranged from 0 to 83%.
Field incidence of sclerotinia by county: Stutsman = average of 28% and range
of 0-58%, Eddy and Foster = average of 25% and range of 3-70%, Wells = average
of 40% and range of 3-83%, and Sheridan = average of 38% and range of 0-73%.
Estimated seed yield loss is about 0.7% for each percent of plants
infected. The Eddy and Foster county average of 25% infection would
correspond with about 18% yield loss. The highest incidence was 83% in a Wells
county field and the corresponding yield loss estimate would be 58%.
The disease survey also included Alternaria black spot,
aster yellows and blackleg. Incidence of aster yellows and blackleg
generally were low. Aster yellows was found at very low levels in 14% of fields
surveyed. Blackleg was found in 12 of 39 fields. In affected fields, blackleg
incidence ranged from 3 to 20% of inspected plants. All fields had Alternaria
black spot on seed pods but severity was low.

SCAB RATINGS FOR WHEAT VARIETIES AT CARRINGTON
As a reference in evaluating wheat variety tolerance to scab
(Fusarium head blight), the following are scab ratings of HRS and durum wheat
varieties tested in dryland, recrop trials at the NDSU Carrington Research
Extension Center in 2001. The trials were planted April 30 on durum
ground.
