SOUTH-CENTRAL
ND WEATHER
AND CROP OVERVIEW
During August 9 to
15, areas north of I-94 received 0.1 to 0.7 inches of rainfall as recorded at
NDAWN sites in south-central ND. Also, rainfall was occurring in most of this
region during the day (August 16) this report was written. Although additional
rainfall will hamper small grain harvest, the moisture would be useful in
supporting warm-season crop yield especially in counties near the South Dakota
border. On August 15, estimated daily water use ranged from 0.16 to 0.24 inches for corn emerged May 15, soybean and
dry bean emerged May 29, and sunflower emerged June 5. Daily crop water use
estimates from NDAWN may be obtained from the following website:
The majority of
small grain acres have been harvested south of I-94. At least 50% of small
grain acres in the northern part of this region have been harvested. Canola
harvest also is in progress. The high winds from last weekend caused canola
harvest problems (e.g. swath movement) in Wells County. Preliminary reports
regarding canola indicate only average yields due to sclerotinia, harvest
problems, etc. Row crops generally look good to excellent in the region. Some
reports of yellow soybean (likely due to insufficient nitrogen) have been
received in Dickey and LaMoure counties.
The NDSU
Carrington Research Extension Center’s 2000 dryland, no-till winter wheat trial
included 23 cultivars that averaged 61.9 bushels/acre. Arapahoe, Nekota,
Ransom, and Tandem were the highest yielding varieties in this year’s trial,
with yields ranging from 67.1 to 77.3 bushels/acre. During the past 3 years
(1998-2000), Arapahoe (62.7 bushels/acre), Ransom (61.5 bushels/acre), and
Seward (60.4 bushels/acre) were the highest yielding varieties.
