POST-EMERGENCE FOXTAIL HERBICIDE CHOICES IN WHEAT

Post-emergence herbicide choices for foxtail (pigeongrass) control in wheat include Achieve, Cheyenne, Dakota, Discover, Everest, Hoelon, Puma, Stampede, and Tiller. The following is a listing of herbicide application rates and timing for foxtail and wheat, approximate costs, and additional weeds controlled.

*Achieve:

Application rate = 7 oz WDG/acre. Cost = $14/acre. Foxtail stage = 1- to 5-leaf. Wheat stage = 2-leaf to boot. Do not apply on spring wheat east of ND Hwy 281 or in the following counties: Dickey, LaMoure, Stutsman, Foster, Eddy, Ramsey, and Towner. Also controls wild oat.

*Cheyenne:

Application rate = 40 acres/box. Cost = $16.25/acre. Green foxtail stage = 2-leaf to 2-tiller. Wheat stage (HRS or winter wheat only) = 3-leaf to end of tillering (6-leaf). Also controls wild oat and barnyardgrass, and numerous annual broadleaf weeds.

*Dakota

Application rate = 1 to 1.33 pt/acre. Cost = $5.50-7.25/acre. Green foxtail stage = 2-leaf to 2-tiller. Wheat stage (HRS and HRW wheat only) = 3- to 6-leaf. Also controls several annual broadleaf weeds.

*Discover:

Application rate = 4 fl oz/acre. Cost = $19/acre. Foxtail stage = 1- to 5-leaf. Wheat stage (HRS and durum wheat only) = 2-leaf to emergence of 4^th tiller. Also controls wild oat, barnyardgrass, and volunteer corn.

*Everest:

Application rate = 0.4 to 0.6 oz WDG/acre. Cost = $8-12/acre. Green foxtail stage = up to 4 leaves. Wheat stage (HRS and durum wheat only) = 1- to 6-leaf. Also controls wild oat and suppresses yellow foxtail and several other weeds.

*Hoelon:

Application rate = 2 to 2.66 pt/acre. Cost = $15-20/acre. Foxtail stage = 1- to 3-leaf. Wheat stage = up to 4-leaf. Also controls wild oat.

*Puma:

Application rate = 0.33 (green foxtail) to 0.4 (green and yellow foxtail) pt/acre. Foxtail stage = 1-leaf to 2-tiller. Wheat stage (HRS and durum wheat only) = 1-leaf to 60 days before harvest. Cost = $7.50-9/acre. Also controls volunteer corn.

*Stampede 80EDF:

Application rate = 1.25-1.4 lb/acre. Cost = $5.75-6.25/acre. Foxtail stage = 1- to 3-leaf. HRS wheat stage = 2- to 5-leaf and durum stage = 2- to 4-leaf. Add MCPA ester at 0.5 pt/A. Also controls several annual broadleaf weeds.

*Tiller:

Application rate = 1.0 (green foxtail) to 1.2 (green and yellow foxtail) pt/acre. Cost = $11-13/acre. Foxtail stage = 2-leaf to 2-tiller. Wheat stage (HRS and HRW wheat only) = 3- to 4-leaf up to 6-leaf. Also several annual broadleaf weeds.
