Juneberry Evaluation
R.A. Henson and G. Marchus

Juneberries (also known as Saskatoons or serviceberries) are a prized native fruit in the Northern Plains. Recent interest in commercial production has led to the establishment in 2001 of a variety trial in North Dakota. The adaptation and production of 10 Canadian varieties selected for fruit production and quality are being compared to the native variety distributed by the NRCS. Data collection on growth, pest problems, and survival is underway. When significant production begins in 3-5 years, fruit yield and quality will be evaluated. This project is part of a collaborative effort with Dan Kelner of Velva, a pioneer in commercial juneberry production, and Dr. Harlene Hatterman-Valenti, NDSU Plant Sciences Department.w
