ANSC Student Scholarship Opportunities

To be considered for scholarships, you must complete the NDSU Academic Scholarship Application. The deadline for scholarships is March 1 of each year. If you have any questions, please contact Lauren Hanna, Scholarship Committee Chair (, or 701.231.7636).

 

Undergraduate Student Scholarship Opportunities:

  • Animal Science Scholarship - Awarded to students in each of the three animal science majors (Animal Science, Equine Science, and Veterinary Technology). Number and amount of awards are dependent on funds raised by the department.
  • Animal Sciences Academic Quadrathlon Scholarship - Awarded to undergraduate students that participate in the Academic Quadrathlon team competition at the American Society of Animal Science Midwest Section Annual Meeting (mid-March every year). Team consists of 4 members, single award per member.
  • Bruce J. Beilke Memorial Scholarship - Awarded to current Animal Science majors in their Junior year, with preference to student(s) that have the potential to make significant contributions to the field of agriculture. Number of awards is dependent on funds available.
  • Malina Ellingson-Larson Memorial Scholarship - Awarded to Veterinary Technology majors with a minimum 2.5 GPA and a strong affinity for companion animals. Preference given to students from a rural background. Single award per year.
  • Institute for Feed Education and Research Fund - Awarded to Animal Science, Equine Science, or Veterinary Technology majors with an interest in the feed industry or animal nutrition. Number of awards is dependent on funds available.
  • George R. Fisher Memorial Scholarship - Awarded to Animal Science majors with preference to student(s) specializing in dairy science or dairy cattle. Number of awards is dependent on funds available.
  • Eugene R. Hinsz Animal Husbandry Scholarship - Awarded to students who graduated from a ND high school or ND residents who graduated from a ND border-adjacent county in MN, MT, or SD. Student's professional intent must be to pursue a career in animal husbandry following their BS degree rather than pursuit of veterinary or graduate school. Must be a sophomore or above with a minimum 2.75 GPA and demonstrated financial need. Number of awards is dependent on funds available.
  • Palmer and Sheryl Holden International Travel Scholarship - Awarded to current Animal Science, Equine Science, or Veterinary Technology majors participating in a CAFSNR study abroad program with preference to students pursuing an independent study program, demonstrated financial need and permanent residents who have not traveled internationally. Number of awards is dependent on funds available.
  • Kenneth and Rachel Kellogg Family Scholarship - Sophomore or above with a declared major within the CAFSNR with preference given to Animal Science or majors pursuing veterinary medicine career. Must have graduated from a North Dakota high school with preference given to student who graduated from high school in Dickey County, ND and demonstrated financial need. Number of awards is dependent on funds available.
  • Kempton Cooperative Shipping Organization Scholarship - Awarded to current Animal Science, Equine Science, or Veterinary Technology majors with preference to seniors from the Larimore, Northwood, Unity, Fordville, or Finley-Sharon school districts in North Dakota. Number of awards is dependent on funds available.
  • Truman Kingsley Family Scholarship - Awarded to currently enrolled CAFSNR students assisting with livestock judging teams. Number of awards is dependent on funds available.
  • Leland Red Angus Ranch Scholarship - Awarded to currently enrolled sophomore, junior, or senior majoring in Animal Sciences with a minimum 2.75 GPA. Must be involved in student activities and have an interest in the beef cattle industry (not limited to beef cattle production). One award must be given based on demonstrated financial need. Number of awards is dependent on funds available.
  • Merle Light Memorial Scholarship - Awarded to a junior or senior majoring in Animal Science who is a North Dakota resident with a minimum 3.0 GPA. Single award per year.
  • Martin J. Marchello and Barbara Handy-Marchello Animal Sciences Scholarship - Awarded to Animal Science majors with preference given to students studying meat science. Must be at least a sophomore at time of disbursement with a cumulative 3.0 minimum GPA. Number of awards is dependent on funds available.
  • John W. Murphy Scholarship - Awarded to full-time enrolled students with financial need and a 3.0 minimum GPA who are pursuing a degree in Animal Science with a focus on animal husbandry or agriculture communication. Number of awards is dependent on funds available.
  • North Dakota Livestock Endowment Foundation, M. L. Buchanan Memorial Scholarship - Awarded to upperclassmen who are enrolled in the CAFSNR with a 3.0 minimum GPA. Preference given to students with an interest in livestock production. Number of awards is dependent on funds available.
  • North Dakota Livestock Endowment Foundation, Undergraduate Scholarship - Awarded to students at sophomore level or higher with a minimum 3.0 GPA. Preference given to students with an interest in livestock production. Number of awards is dependent on funds available.
  • B. O. "Chub" and Mabel Orton Scholarship - Awarded to senior undergraduate in Animal Science with preference given to a native North Dakotan. Single award per year.
  • Rase Family Scholarship - Awarded to students enrolled in the CAFSNR who have completed at least one year in agricultural and/or animal sciences, have an interest in the improvement of western North Dakota beef, and scholastically have demonstrated such pursuance of the profession at NDSU. First preference given to students from western North Dakota with a second preference given to students from North Dakota. Number of awards is dependent on funds available.
  • George Strum Memorial Scholarship - Awarded to sophomore, junior, or senior in the CAFSNR who is a North Dakota resident and maintains a minimum 3.0 GPA. Preference is to Animal Science majors concentrating on beef cattle. Single award per year.
  • Jim and Judy Tilton Scholarship - Awarded to juniors and seniors majoring in Animal Science or Equine Science with a minimum 3.5 GPA. Preference given to students involved in extracurricular activities within the department. Number of awards is dependent on funds available.
  • Roger and Ruth Van Prooien Scholarship - Available to students enrolled in the CAFSNR majoring in Microbiological or Animal Sciences and who are pursuing a vocation in veterinary science. Number of awards is dependent on funds available and split between departments.
  • Harold E. Vettel Memorial Scholarship - Awarded to currently enrolled freshman majoring in Animal Science who are residents of North Dakota and has a minimum 2.0 GPA. Number of awards is dependent on funds available.
  • Leonard Wulf Memorial Scholarship - Awarded to Animal Science majors with an interest in beef cattle. Single award per year.

 

Undergraduate Student Scholarship Opportunities - Meat and/or Livestock Judging:

  • Paul Berg Scholarship - Awarded to the four meats judging participants on the marking team at the International Meats Judging Contest (typically October each year).
  • James Carr Little I Award - Awarded to the top junior livestock judge at the annual Little International contest (early February each year). Single award per year.
  • Russ and Helen Danielson Scholarship - Awarded to Animal Science majors who are actively involved in Saddle & Sirloin Club, have demonstrated leadership qualities, have maintained a 3.0 GPA or greater, and must have participated (or plan to) in livestock or meats judging programs. Number of awards is dependent on funds available.
  • North Dakota Beef Commission Meat Judging Team Scholarship - Awarded to judging members that participate in the American Royal contest and determined by individual contest performance. Up to 5 awards per year.
  • Verlin & Eloise Johnson Animal Sciences Livestock and Meats Judging Scholarship (Freshmen & Transfer Students) - Awarded to accepted incoming students (freshmen and transfers) who have demonstrated interest in livestock and/or meats judging through 4-H or FFA competitions. Number of awards is dependent on funds available.
  • Verlin & Eloise Johnson Animal Sciences Livestock and Meats Judging Scholarship - Awarded to currently enrolled students in CAFSNR who have completed the first semester of livestock and/or meats evaluation. Students must participate as a member of the junior livestock and/or meats judging team and maintain a 2.0 GPA or higher. Number of awards is dependent on funds available.
  • Verlin K. and Eloise E. Johnson Scholarship - Awarded to students with a minimum 2.5 GPA who have an interest in livestock or meats judging. Number of awards is dependent on funds available.
  • O. J. Stanley Little I Award - Awarded to the top junior meats judge at the annual Little International contest (early February each year). Single award per year.

 

Graduate Student Scholarship Opportunities:

  • Frank Bain Graduate Student Scholarship - Awarded to current graduate student enrolled in the CAFSNR. Number and amount of awards is dependent on funds distributed amongst CAFSNR departments.
  • North Dakota Livestock Endowment Foundation, Arlon G. Hazen Memorial Scholarship - Awarded to current enrolled CAFSNR graduate students with a 3.0 minimum GPA, preference to students with an interest in livestock production research. Single award per year.
