How To Upload a Video to YouTube

  1. Go to
  2. Sign in to your YouTube account or contact Ag Comm about access to the NDSU Extension YouTube account.
  3. Make sure you're signed into the account by looking up at the top righthand part of the page.
  4. To the left of the username, you'll find a pointed up arrow. Click on that as that is the "Upload" button.
  5. A new page will load and then click on the now larger pointed up arrow where it says "Select files to upload".  That will let you select a file from your hard drive. Select the video you want to upload.
  6. The video will start to upload and you'll see its progress as well as a bunch of other options. Make sure you do not close this page until the video has finished uploading or it will not finish. While the video is uploading you can change the name, add a description, set your privacy options, and fill out other relevant information.
    1. Title your video with a descriptive title, keeping your keywords in mind.
    2. Add a description that tells users what is in your video and why they should watch it. Use your keywords in your description.
    3. Add tags to your video. Be sure to include NDSU and "NDSU Extension." Keep your keywords in mind. To enter tags with multiple words, like "food safety," put quotation marks around the keyword.
    4. In the Privacy Settings, make your video "Public," if you want it available to the public. If your video is not ready to go public, choose "Unlisted." You can send the link to the video to those people you want to view it, but it will not be open to the public.
    5. Add your video to the appropriate Category, usually Education.
    6. Set the License and rights ownership to "Creative Commons - Attribution."
    7. Add closed captioning to make your video accessible
    8. Save your changes.
  7. Once the video has finished uploading it will need to spend some time processing on YouTube's servers before it is ready for viewing online. You'll be able to watch it process at the top of the page. Once it reaches 100%, you'll see a link at the top of the screen that you can click to view your video. Alternatively, you can always find your videos by click on your username at the top left of the page and then choosing "Videos" (which may be labeled as "My Videos" for some accounts). This will let you access all the videos you have uploaded.
8. When you're on your video's page, you'll be able to watch it and share it. You'll find a button labeled "Share" underneath the video that will provide you with a link to send to other people and a few other sharing options, such as email and Facebook. You can also embed a video or playlist on your Ag CMS page.
