How Do I Choose Between a Page, an Article, or a News Item?

When adding content to your website, the item types of Page, Article, and News Item are a lot alike. Why would you choose one rather than another?

Choose Page...

The Page item type should be the default choice.

First off, the Page item type should be the default choice.

OK, so why would you choose an Article or News Item instead?

Choose Article...

The Article is a good choice if there are images, PDFs, documents, links, or other items you want to attach to the text/images you will be adding to the page. For instance, perhaps you have a page for information about the 4-H program. You could have text and images on the page talking about how great it is. But you could also upload documents with that Article that pertain to 4-H. Maybe sign-up forms or brochures. Maybe a link to the national 4-H program. These attachments would be specific to this Article. It would be a way to have everything in one place. But like most everything in Ag CMS, you could do the same thing using other methods too.

Another reason to choose the Article item type is if you are interested in using the Ajax Slide Viewer display. It is the only one that it works with.

Choose News Item...

The News Item is a bit of a special purpose item type. News Items will appear in the "Latest News" portlet if they are in the News folder. And News Items should be in the News folder. But creating a News Item is a lot like a Page. Just enter your content as usual. If you have an image though, you should attach it to the News Item in the provided field. That makes it available to automatically display.
