Write the Right Word: ZIP

That number after the state name in a mailing address is a ZIP code.

Note that all three letters are capitalized. That’s because ZIP is an acronym for Zoning Improvement Plan.

So the next time you develop a registration form, questionnaire or something else requiring people to provide their address, make sure to ask them for their ZIP code.

When writing an address, you need to leave a space between the state name and ZIP code, but you don’t need a comma there. For example: 1024 9th Ave. S., Fargo, ND 58103
