Embed a Google Map on Your Website

4/30/19

Map of NDSURemember when we had to use an atlas or maps to figure out how to get somewhere? When Mapquest came on the scene, it felt so high tech to get step-by-step directions.

But really, how did we get along at all without today’s Google Maps? You don’t have to haul it around. You won’t lose it. You can’t spill coffee on it. It’s right there on your phone. The application will give you step-by-step directions, whether spoken or “written." Clicking on your destination you will often see other points of interest in the area like a nearby gas station.

Recently, I worked with Jodi Bruns, Leadership and Civic Engagement Extension Specialist with a website for the new program Energizing Entrepreneurs. The program’s first event will be held in Oakes, N.D., and she was targeting small business owners all over North Dakota. So I suggested we add a map because a lot of the audience might not be familiar with Oakes (and also for the reasons mentioned above). It was easy to embed the map in Ag CMS. It’s just like the instructions for embedding a YouTube video on your site. Google owns YouTube, so they tend to function in the same way.

You see Google Maps all over online today. The next time you host an event it’s a good idea to add a map to your website so people can get to you easily.
