Basic Setup Guide for New Computers

Here are a couple of items to help you get started with your new computer:

Getting Connected for the 1st Time

For those on Campus, you will need to log in while your computer is connected to the network via ethernet cable. While previous notebook computers had a network jack built in on the right hand side, some of the newest ones do not.  For new computers, a USB-C network adapter is included.  To use, simply plug the adapter into a USB-C slot on your computer and connect the network cable to the other end.  For additional information on computer connectors and cables, please visit our page on connecting your cables.

The first time you log in, you will need to click on "Other User" in the lower left corner of the screen.  Then, enter your NDSU login information.  Once you have logged in, your computer will store the login credentials and can then be logged into without being connected to the campus network.

If you are off Campus, you do not have to be connected to the network to log in.  You will need to click on "Other User" in the lower left corner of the screen.  Then, enter your login information provided.  At this point we strongly encourage you to change your password.


If you cannot login


Each computer was configured for the person who requested it.  If this computer was re-assigned to someone else, they will need to have an account added to the computer.  There are 2 ways to do this:

1)  The person who requested the computer can log in as themselves and add another account.

2)  The new user can contact the help desk (1-8685) and request a their account be added to the computer.


1) Log in using the credentials provided on the stick note attached to the computer and use these instructions to add a new user.  

2) Contact the help desk (1-8685) to request assistance


Set up Outlook (Email)

- Open the Outlook application
- Enter a Profile Name (can be anything) and click OK
- Enter your NDUS email username (, then click Connect.
- Enter your NDUS password and click Sign in
- You should now be prompted by DUO to authenticate
- Once Authenticated, the setup should be complete.  Click OK to finish.  Outlook should then automatically open.


Wireless Setup (On-Campus Only)

Once you've logged into your computer, click on the wireless icon in the lower right corner and lick on the Eduroam network  Your credentials will be [username] and your NDSU (not NDUS/email) password.
