Add AD User Accounts (On-Campus)

Computers that are located on campus utilize Active Directory (AD) and their NDSU account for their computer logins.  The following steps are how to add an additional person to an on-campus computer.


To add a new account to a campus computer:

  1. Open File Explorer by (left) clicking on the yellow folder icon on your taskbar at the bottom of your screen.
  2. In File Explorer, in the left column, Right-click on This PC and select Manage in the context menu that appears.  This will open the Computer Management window.

  3. In the Computer Management Window, double click on Local Users and Groups in the left column and then select the Groups folder that appears below it.

  4. In the main (middle) window pane you should now see a list of all the security groups on the computer.  The two you need to be aware of are the Administrators group and the NDSU-local-user-rights group.

  5. Adding an account to Administrators, gives them administrative rights on the computer, adding the account to NDSU-local-user-rights only grants them user rights (cannot make major changes or install software).  Do NOT assign accounts to the Users group, they will NOT be able to log in.

  6. Once you have decided what rights the account needs, double click the corresponding group to open it.

  7. Once you are in the group properties window, click on the Add button at the bottom.

  8. In the new window that appears, enter the NDSU account name of the person you wish to add in the text box (generally firstname.lastname).  When finished, click the OK button.

  9. You will again see the group properties window and should see the account you added in the list of members.

  10. Once finished, click the OK button and then close the Computer Management window.

  11. The person you added should now be able to log onto your computer using their NDSU credentials.
