Can I Use Remote Desktop?

County Offices

Unfortunately, these are behind the state firewall which prevents RDP access.  In these cases, we recommend you either take your computer home or upload all of your work documents into OneDrive to access them remotely.  If you have 3d party support (County technician, NDACo/NRG), you could also visit with them to see if there are additional remote connection options available in your county.

Research Extension Centers

We do not currently restrict remote desktop access to REC computers.  While remote desktop should be enabled by default, if it isn't, please follow these instructions to turn it on.

On-Campus

All computers supported by Ag Comm have remote desktop access enabled and unrestricted.  Duo authentication software has also been deployed to facilitate the ability to work from home.

Before You Leave The Office

1)  Make sure your work computer is left on.  If you shut it off, you will not be able to connect remotely

2)  Prior to connecting to your work computer from home, you will need to get it's name and/or IP address.  There are a couple of methods to do this:

Locate the Help Desk Assistant Icon on your Desktop and click it



Once the program starts, locate your computer name and IP address

 

Command Line / PowerShell:


Right click on the start menu icon and select Windows PowerShell



For the IP address, in the window that open, type:  ipconfig and hit the Enter/Return key

Your IP address can be found listed as IPV4 Address



To get your computer's name, in the window type: $env:computername and hit the Enter/Return key

Connect To Your Computer


  1. Click on the Start Menu and start typing the words Remote Desktop Connection.  When a screen appears with a link, click on the Remote Desktop Connection option.


  2. If needed, click the Show Options arrow in the lower left corner.  You should then see the Computer and User name fields.


  3. For the Computer field, enter your computer name followed by .ad.ndsu.edu - for example:  AG1231234-12345.ad.ndsu.edu

  4. Your User name will be your NDSU ID followed by @ad.ndsu.edu - like firstname.lastname@ad.ndsu.edu


  5. You will then be prompted for credentials.  This will be the same password you use to log into the computer.


  6. Once you've entered your credentials, you may receive a certificate error indicating your computer's identity cannot be verified.  If you see this, click OK.


  7. You will also be prompted for a Duo second factor authentication.  When it pops up, it may attempt to automatically call or push to your Duo app.  If nothing happens, click the Cancel button and select the method you want Duo to use (Push, call, passcode).  Once finished, you will be logged into your campus computer.


Troubleshooting

If you are experiencing connection issues, please try the troubleshooting suggestions below.  It is best to try them one at a time and then attempt to connect to your work computer after each one:

  • Make sure your work computer is turned on
  • Check to make sure your home computer is connected to the internet
  • If it cannot contact your computername.ad.ndsu.edu, try entering your computer's IP address (if you have it) instead
  • If you are using wireless, try connecting to your internet router using a network cable
  • Try temporarily disabling your home computer's anti-virus program
  • Restart your home computer
  • Try restarting your home networking equipment (cable/dsl modem, wireless router)
  • Check with your Internet Service Provider (ISP) to make sure they (and their equipment) support remote desktop connections
