Saving Your Browser's Bookmarks

Chrome, Firefox and Internet Explorer all have different ways of backing up their bookmarks (also known as favorites in Internet Explorer).  While Internet Explorer keeps all of their bookmarks in your favorites folder (C:\users\<your user name>\favorites) as individual files that can be copied elsewhere, bookmarks in Chrome and Firefox must be exported to HTML files for backup.

The following steps will walk you through the process of importing and exporting bookmarks in Firefox and Chrome.  Click on the images to enlarge them.

Firefox

Exporting (Saving) Bookmarks

  1. Open your Firefox Browser
  2. Click on the bookmark button   Firefox Bookmark Button  in the upper right corner of the window.
  3. Select Show All Bookmarks to open the Bookmark Library.
  4. Make sure All Bookmarks is highlighted in the left column and then, at the top of the window, click on Import and Backup > Export Bookmarks to HTML.

  5. Give your bookmark file a unique name and save it.

Tip:  When naming your bookmark file, it is a good idea to add an identifier to indicate that it came from Firefox.   This helps prevent it from being confused with your Chrome bookmark backups (which are also an .HTML file).  For example, instead of naming it "John's Bookmarks", call it "John's Firefox Bookmarks".

Importing Bookmarks

  1. Open your Firefox Browser.
  2. Click on the bookmark button   Firefox Bookmark Button  in the upper right corner of the window.
  3. Select Show All Bookmarks to open the Bookmark Library.
  4. Make sure All Bookmarks is highlighted in the left column and then, at the top of the window, click on Import and Backup > Import Bookmarks from HTML.

  6. Give your bookmark file a unique name and save it.

As with Firefox, we also recommend you give your Chrome bookmark file a unique name indicating it came from Chrome to prevent confusion later.

  1. Open your Chrome browser.
  2. In the top right, click the menu button  Chrome Menu Button  in the upper right corner of the window.

  5. Click Choose File

  6. Locate your bookmark file, select it and click Open.

If you are transferring your Chrome bookmarks to a new installation (new computer)
, the bookmarks will show up in your browser's bookmarks bar.

If you already have bookmarks in Chrome before importing, the bookmarks will not show up in your bookmarks bar.  Instead they will be in a new folder called "Imported From..."
