Buchanan Bio

David Buchanan is Professor of Animal Sciences and Associate Dean of the College of Agriculture, Food Systems, and Natural Resources at NDSU. He previously served as Head of the NDSU Department of Animal Sciences.

Dr. Buchanan was born in Fargo and graduated from NDSU in 1975. After that, he completed his M.S. and Ph. D at the University of Nebraska. From 1980 to 2007, he was on the faculty of Oklahoma State University where he was, when he finished, the Graduates of Distinction Professor of Animal Science.

He has served as Chair of the Oklahoma State University Faculty Council and is a Past-President of the American Society of Animal Science.

He has won teaching awards from the American Society of Animal Science (for which he was also named as a Fellow), the North American Colleges and Teachers of Agriculture and the USDA. His research career, with an emphasis on Animal Breeding and Genetics, has resulted in more than 80 refereed journal articles, 14 book chapters and more than 300 other publications.

He, and his wife Cindy, are the parents of Michael, Peter and Amy Virginia.
