Animal sciences professor to give Phi Kappa Phi lecture

Faculty, staff and students are invited to attend the Fall Phi Kappa Phi Faculty Lecture, titled Does What Mom Eats Matter?” by Joel Caton, professor of animal sciences, scheduled for Tuesday, Nov. 28, at 7 p.m. in the Memorial Union Plains room. A reception will follow the lecture. Online registration by Nov. 24 is appreciated but not required.

The Phi Kappa Phi Faculty Lecture was established in 2015 to recognize faculty whose high-impact research, scholarship or creative activity supports NDSU's top tier research status and who have a proven ability to present their research to a broad community.

Caton studies how nutrition alters metabolic and developmental outcomes. He joined the NDSU faculty in 1988 after being a postdoctoral research fellow at the University of Missouri, Columbia. Caton conducts research and teaches courses in ruminant nutrition and digestive physiology. His research interests include ruminant nutrition, digestive physiology and developmental programming related to maternal nutrition, growth and development, protein metabolism, forage utilization and trace mineral metabolism. His research program has produced numerous publications and has been supported by grants from federal, state and industry partners.

At NDSU, Caton has received the College of Agriculture, Food Systems, and Natural Resources Excellence in Research Award and the NDSU Jordan A. Engberg Presidential Professorship. He also received the American Society of Animal Science-American Feed Industry Association Ruminant Nutrition Award and the Cromwell Research in Minerals Award.

He was elected to the American Society of Animal Science board of directors in 2016. The organization has more than 6,000 members around the world.

Caton earned his bachelor’s degree from New Mexico State University, Las Cruces; his master’s degree in animal science at the University of Missouri, Columbia; and his doctorate in ruminant nutrition from New Mexico State University.
