Fungicide Efficacy Testing Results – Lentils

Fungicide efficacy results are presented for control of Ascochyta blight, anthracnose, and Sclerotinia stem rot on lentils, with results organized by registered fungicide.

FUNGICIDES REGISTERED FOR FOLIAR USE ON LENTILS IN NORTH DAKOTA:

Azoyxstrobin (FRAC 11) - Quadris 250SC (6 to 15.5 fl oz/ac) - Quadris contains 250 grams azoxystrobin per liter.

  • Efficacy in field trials, Ascochyta:  Carrington 2012a [ illustrated | full ]
  • Efficacy in field trials, Anthracnose:  Carrington 2012b [ illustrated | full ], Sykeston 2012 [ illustrated | full ], Williston 2012 [ illustrated | full ], Carrington 2013 [ illustrated | full ], Williston 2013 [ illustrated | full ]
  • Efficacy in field trials, Sclerotinia:  No data.
  • General commentary on efficacy:  Quadris at 6 fl oz/ac exhibits intermediate efficacy against anthracnose.  It is not expected to have activity against Sclerotinia, and there is not enough data to comment on its efficacy against Ascochyta on lentils.  

 Boscalid (FRAC 7) - Endura 70WG (6 oz/ac for Ascochyta blight; 8 to 11 oz/ac for other diseases) - Endura contains 700grams boscalid per kilogram.

Chlorothalonil (FRAC M5) - Bravo Weather Stik, Echo 720, others (1 to 1.5 pt/ac, but application rate may differ byproduct; always check the label) - 720 grams chlorothalonil per liter

  • Efficacy in field trials, Ascochyta:  No data 
  • Efficacy in field trials, Anthracnose:  Carrington 2012b [ illustrated | full ], Carrington 2013 [ illustrated | full ] 
  • Efficacy in field trials, Sclerotinia:  No data 
  • General commentary on efficacy:  Chlorothalonil is a contact fungicide, and it is expected to be most effective against Ascochyta and anthracnose when applied when disease is a zero to trace levels and good coverage is obtained.  

Fluopyram (FRAC 7) + prothioconazole (FRAC 3) - ProPulse 400SC (8 to 10.3 fl ozac) - ProPulse contains 200 grams fluopyram + 200 grams prothioconazole per liter.

  • Efficacy in field trials, Anthracnose:  Carrington 2013 [ illustrated | full ].  
  • Efficacy in field trials, Sclerotinia:  No data. 
  • General commentary on efficacy:  There is not enough data to comment on the efficacy of ProPulse against lentil diseases. 

Fluxapyroxad (FRAC 7) + pyraclostrobin (FRAC 11) - Priaxor 500SC (4 to 8 fl oz/ac) - Priaxor contains 333 grams pyraclostrobin + 167 grams fluxapyroxad per liter.

  • General commentary on efficacy:  Priaxor has high efficacy against anthracnose.  When applied for the control of anthracnose, only the pyraclostrobin component of Priaxor confers disease control (fluxapyroxad has poor efficacy against anthracnose).  There is not enough data to comment on its efficacy against Ascochyta.   

Penthiopyrad (FRAC 7) - Vertisan 200EC (14 to 20 fl oz/ac) - Vertisan contains 200 grams penthiopyrad per liter.

  • General commentary on efficacy:  We have not tested Vertisan on lentils over multiple seasons, but the available results suggest that Vertisan has poor efficacy against anthracnose.  There is not enough data to comment on its efficacy against Ascochyta or Sclerotinia on lentils.  

Prothioconazole (FRAC 3) - Proline 480SC (5.0 to 5.7 fl oz/ac) - Proline contains 480 grams prothioconazole per liter.

Picoxystrobin (FRAC 11) - Aproach (6 to 12 fl oz/ac) - Aproach contains 250 grams picoxystrobin per liter.

Pyraclostrobin (FRAC 11) - Headline (6 to 9 fl oz/ac) - Headline contains 250 grams pyraclostrobin per liter.

OTHER FUNGICIDE STUDIES - ASCOCHYTA BLIGHT OF LENTILS

Field evaluation of fungicide treated buffer strips for control of Ascochyta blight on lentils grown adjacent to a previous lentil crop; Valley County, MT (2012):  When lentils are planted adjacent to a field where lentils were grown the previous year, a pronounced gradient of Ascochyta blight is often observed.  In this study, neither the use of a 90-foot-wide or 270-foot-wide fungicide treated strip provided satisfactory disease control in the lentils grown immediately adjacent to the previous year’s lentil crop.  We conclude that the use of a fungicide-treated strip is a risky strategy, and that a foliar fungicide application to the entire field may be advisable in lentils planted adjacent to a field where they were seeded the previous year, especially when weather conditions favor the disease:  User-friendly summary of key results (PDF)
