Rotten egg odor from the raw water tap or directly form the well.

A rotten egg odor from the raw water tap or directly form the well indicates there is dissolved hydrogen sulfide gas in the raw water.

Treatment:  To remove odors caused by hydrogen sulfide (rotten egg smell) use chlorination followed by sedimentation or use an oxidation filter (sometimes called an aeration filter) followed by an activated carbon filter to remove excess chlorine. This unit must be installed upstream from a water softener.

Always have your water tested and base any treatment on those results. Our Water Quality Interpretation Tool will aid you in your decisions.
