Exercises

In this second exercise, a row of ponderosa pine will be pruned, in a two-row belt, where it is joined by a row of caragana.  Note: You will have to print out these directions, or write them down, before continuing on to the design screen to actually complete the exercises.

 

Exercise II � Pruning ponderosa pine in Nebraska

A.  Design screen.

1.  Select Nebraska.

2.  Click on the Add Row button.

3.  Click the Edit button. 

4.  Choose �Ponderosa pine (C)� from the species list.

5.  Enter the following measurements:

            A.  Spacing � 15 feet

            B.  Diameter � 7 inches

            C.  Height � 50 feet

            D.  Crown Ratio � 0.9

6.  The trees are in a �Healthy� condition.

7.  Because this is the first row, the �Distance between rows� is zero.

8.  Click the Update button.

9.  Click the Add Row button.

10.  Click the Edit button.

11.  Choose �Caragana (S)� from the species list.

12.  Enter the following measurements:

            A.  Spacing � 6 feet

            B.  Diameter � 1 inches

            C.  Height � 8 feet

            D.  Crown Ratio � 0.95

13.  The shrubs are in a �Fine� condition.

14.  �Distance between rows� is 15 feet.

15.  Click the Update button.

16.  Submit the data and proceed to the Management screen.

 

B.  Management screen

1.  Before doing any kind of management, Calculate Windbreak Protection.  What is the density of the trees?

2.  Prune the ponderosa pine row by 20%.  Calculate Windbreak Protection again.  Note the new density of the shelterbelt.

3.  Return to the Design Screen.
