Latest research on grazing, nutrition, weaning
Be in Bismarck on February 11 to learn the latest research on grazing, nutrition and weaning during at a daylong beef cattle workshop set for Feb. 11 at the Doublewood Inn in Bismarck.
The morning session will include brief updates on the North Dakota Beef Quality Assurance program from Lisa Pederson, NDSU Extension beef quality assurance specialist; North Dakota Beef Cattle Improvement Association from Kris Ringwall, director of NDSU’s Dickinson Research Extension Center; and North Dakota Stockmen’s Association from Jason Schmidt, the association’s vice president.
Other topics for the morning session are summaries of research on:
Late-season grazing alternatives - Brian Neville, a ruminant nutrition technician in NDSU’s Animal Sciences Department
Feeding cull cows - Michelle Thompson, southwest feeder coordinator at the NDSU Hettinger Research Extension Center
Effect of animal disposition on carcass traits - Eric Berg, an associate professor in NDSU’s Animal Sciences Department
Natural vs. conventional finishing of feedlot cattle - Vern Anderson, an animal scientist at the NDSU Carrington Research Extension Center
Fetal programming effects of gestational nutrition - Kim Vonnahme, an assistant professor in NDSU’s Animal Sciences Department
Weaning age and backgrounding alternatives - Doug Landblom, an animal scientist at the NDSU Dickinson Research Extension Center
The afternoon session will start with featured speaker Tom Field, executive director of producer education for the National Cattlemen’s Beef Association. He will give a presentation titled “Adjusting to Today’s Economy.” He has more than 20 years of experience in teaching and research as an animal sciences professor at Colorado State University.
The registration cost is $25 per person if received by Jan. 29. That fee includes lunch. Registration at the door will cost $35 and will not include lunch.
The cost for students (college and below) is $10 if registering by Jan. 29. That includes lunch. Students also will be charged $10 if registering at the door, but they will not be able to have lunch.
