SBARE Potato Granting Committee

Northern Plains Potato Growers Association Office

East Grand Forks, MN

Meeting Minutes

March 2, 2009

The State Board of Agricultural Research and Education’s potato granting committee was called to order by chairman Mark Thompson.  Voting members present were Thompson, Brad Nilson, Neil Jonk, Alan Pranke and Bob Moe.  Non-voting members present were Dr. Gary Secor, Wade Gerner and Chuck Gunnerson.  Also present was Lori Capouch.

The committee briefly discussed the policies of the Agricultural Research Fund and then discussed the following proposal.

Proposals Considered:

Support of Irrigated Potato Research

Dr. Gary Secor

Amount Requested:  $9,589

The objective of this project is to conduct irrigated potato research at a site typical of commercial production to facilitate cultivar identification, production guidelines, best management practices and disease control strategies specific for irrigated potato production in North Dakota.

Improving nitrogen use efficiency in irrigated potatoes

Dr. Harlene Hatterman-Valenti

Amount Requested:  $9,000

The proposed research will investigate the use of slow release nitrogen in comparison to urea and determine its effect on potato growth and development, and the economical costs associated with each treatment.  Growers in North Dakota need to find ways to protect the ground water from contamination through nitrogen leaching while maintaining tuber yield and quality.

Funding Decisions

It was moved and seconded to grant $9,589 to the Support of Irrigated Potato Research project as proposed by Dr. Secor.  The motion carried unanimously.

There being no further business the meeting was adjourned.
