Class Projects (Class of 2005)

Bridging Communities Working for Change

Explanation: Organize a forum for leaders, who have stepped forward to make changes and lead projects in their communities, to network, collaborate, share and celebrate their successes.

Need: Eleven southwest North Dakota communities have conducted strategic plans and are implementing projects. This has created great bonding within the community. However, for even greater results in our rural communities, these community leaders many of them new to a leadership role need a support system. Many of the projects are similar in each community, as are many of the problems they face. Bringing this group of creative and committed people together to support and brainstorm together will create a great synergy for our region.

Goals:
1. Networking Build personal relationships among people in several communities to support one another through challenges of making changes in rural areas.
2. Support, resources and training Allow a variety of leaders identify what needs they have and then work to put together the needed resources.
3. Collaboration Build a team of individuals working together for the region.
4. Building self esteem Provide an opportunity for each individual to say good things about their towns.
5. Celebrate successes and reward these individuals for their commitment to community service.

Impact: The initial forum will target strategic plan steering committee leaders and project leaders in the 11 southwest North Dakota communities where I have conducted strategic plans in the last three years. I envision that this forum will rejuvenate and energize individuals who want to make change by allowing them to meet others with the same goal. This positive energy will be spread throughout their communities and to other communities in the region.

Key Steps and Timetable:
1. Identify a design team of individuals who want to participate in the forum.
2. Discuss possible forum options panel discussion, speakers, etc. with several individuals in the target audience.
3. Set a date for the forum for fall 2004
4. Invite individuals and promote the forum
5. Arrange for meeting room and meal
6. Evaluate and determine if it should be held again

Resources: Money for materials, rewards and for a meal or refreshments.
