Reproductive Management Workshop for Small Ruminants

This workshop will offer reproductive management experience and educational resources to small ruminant veterinary practitioners and students from throughout the U.S. Veterinary practitioners and students wanting to offer reproductive management services to their current and future clientele are strongly encouraged to apply.

Potential attendees are encouraged to apply online. The application deadline is Friday, October 1st, 2010 (Midnight). Up to 10 applicants will be selected to attend the workshop at NDSU in Fargo based on the application information provided below. Selected applicants will receive a $500 travel stipend sponsored by the American Sheep and Goat Center. Veterinary practitioners and students that have a strong desire to offer reproductive management services to their current and future clientele are strongly encouraged to apply.

Topics:
  • Reproduction in Sheep and Goats. Implementation of reproductive management techniques requires a practitioners to have a strong understanding of reproductive physiology and endocrinology in small ruminants.  The basics of sheep and goat reproduction will be covered.
  • Methods of Estrous Synchronization and Superovulation. Successful implementation of artificial insemination and embryo collection and transfer techniques is dependent upon reliable and applicable methods of estrous synchronization and superovulation in sheep and goats.  These techniques will be discussed with attendees.
  • Semen collection, evaluation and preservation. Attendees will gain hands-on experience in a variety of semen collection techniques, and will be trained in proper semen handling, evaluation and preservation for successful AI.
  • Development of teaser rams. Surgical techniques of vasectomy and epididectomy will be demonstrated and learned by attendees, as the development and use of teaser rams and bucks is an important part of reproductive management in small ruminants.
  • Laparoscopic artificial insemination. Animals will be prepared for each attendee to practice the LAI procedure. Competence will be gained in the complete process, from surgical preparation to recovery from anesthesia. In addition, other methods of AI, including vaginal and cervical, will be introduced.
  • Embryo Collection and Transfer. Techniques of superovulation, surgical embryo recovery and embryo transfer will be demonstrated to attendees.  Attendees are encouraged to observe and adopt these techniques as needed in order to meet the needs of their producer clientele.
  • Ultrasonography. Multiple animals at different stages of pregnancy and those bearing different numbers of fetuses will be used so that attendees can gain extensive experience in pregnancy diagnosis, fetal aging, and fetal counting.
