George Maher

Agricultural Safety Specialist
NDSU Extension Service

George became the agricultural safety specialist in 1990 after having been a vocational agriculture instructor in several North Dakota and Minnesota schools. The goal of his program is to reduce the incidence of injury, poisoning and fatal accidents by making people aware of the risks in agriculture. One of his major programs has been tractor safety education, offering a curriculum on safe operation of farm equipment that fulfills the requirements of the U.S. Department of Labor for minors between 14 and 16 years old. More than 900 students have taken the three-day schools since 1990. Power takeoff safety has always been an important part of his program, but demand for demonstrations and education exploded after a young North Dakota man lost both arms in an accident. He has presented his demonstration on PTO safety at fairs, agricultural expositions and other events about 900 times, increasing the sale of replacement PTO shields every time. He has developed tractor safety teaching kits, teaching modules for the pesticide applicator training program, and grain bin and tow rope safety education, and has given assistance to the AgrAbility program for farm accident victims. He is a prolific source of information for the news media and has authored a number of extension publications.
