Upsilon Chapter, Epsilon Sigma Phi
2007 EPSILON SIGMA PHI - RECOGNITION FORM

Nomination Form for: State Friend of Extension Award

Candidate's Name: Sandra Holbrook, NDSU Diversity and Equity Director

Candidate's Current Address: Old Main 202, NDSU, Fargo, ND 58105

Accomplishments and Contributions:

Sandy Holbrook has been a friend of Extension for many years. Though her title has changed, her dedication to helping Extension create a diverse workforce and inclusive work environment has been amazing.

At one time Sandy had an Extension appointment and a part-time office in Morrill Hall. However, when she was assigned to NDSU full time, she continued to support NDSU Extension Service work.

Sandy helped North Dakota become one of the original Change Agent States for Diversity states. The goals of this national program are to build the capacity of the land-grant system to function inclusively and effectively in a multicultural world, and to set standards and implement a vision for supporting healthy, thriving, culturally diverse communities through Extension, research and academic programs. She continues to serve as co-chair of the NDSU group and provide programming ideas.

She also makes sure off-campus staff are represented on groups such as the Presidents Diversity Council.

A few years ago Sandy led making it easy for all Extension staff to complete the climate assessment, then she reported the sometimes eye-opening results.

Sandy spent many hours helping the Extension Service pull together all the information requested by CSREES for civil rights audits in the early 1990s and in December 2006. She provided documentation and made it easier for staff to find information with a new Civil Rights and Diversity Web site.

Sandy helps district directors and department chairs with the hiring process for new employees. She recommends ways to try to get more diverse applicant pools and speaks at every new staff orientation session when shes in town. She also developed an exit interview to find out why some staff leave.

Sandy will be retiring from NDSU soon, but her impact will continue to be felt in the NDSU Extension Service.
