EPSILON SIGMA PHI RECOGNITION FORM Nomination Form for: State Visionary Leadership Recognition Award Candidate's Name: Brad Brummond Candidate's Current Address: 101 County Road 12 B, Park River, ND 58270 Accomplishments and Contributions: SUSTAINABLE AGRICULTURE Under Brads leadership, the NDSU Extension Service participated in a three-year federally funded Coexistence project resulting in the publication of Suggested Best Management Practices for Coexistence of Organic, Biotech, and Conventional Crop Production Systems. The NDSU Extension Service was the only coexistence project nationwide that published results or even finished the grant. This has resulted in Brad continuing to provide information regarding the North Dakota experience at various national conferences, such as the National Association of Ag Departments who now use the NDSU Extension model as baseline, and the PEW Foundation. In addition, Brad serves on a number of boards at the state, regional and national levels representing agriculture. Brad is the vice chair of the North Central SARE Administrative Council and will be chair in 2007, board member and program chair of the Northern Plains Sustainable Agriculture Society, board member of North Dakota Organic Advisory, served on the National Association of County Agricultural Agents Futuring Committee and is the Chair of the Programs Committee for NACAA. Because of the increasing interest in sustainable and organic agriculture, Brad and Frank Kutka are working with selected extension agents to increase their expertise in this field in the next few years. As issues emerge, Brad is viewed as one of the best facilitators regarding coexistence. For example under Brads leadership efforts, he brought together members from the Northern Plains Sustainable Agriculture Society and the North Dakota Weed Control Association to set up guidelines to address the noxious weed control on organic acreage. Brad believes that Extension must continue to be innovative and look at agriculture as a whole. This resulted in the design and delivery of the pesticide problem based learning concept developed with other extension agents. This program was selected as a National Finalist in the NACAA Search for Excellence in Crop Production Program in 2006. Submitted by: Margaret Tweten Email: Margaret.tweten@ndsu.edu |
