Walt Mattson Recognition - Page 2
Walt Mattson served as secretary of the Golden Valley Soil Conservation District
Board from 1951 through 2005. In cooperation with the Soil Conservation
District, a quarter of land was acquired in 1957 to use entirely for
demonstration plots.
During his county agent days, he was a strong advocate of the education process
for farmers and ranchers on a wide range of agricultural issues. He led the
promotion for the conservation ethic at all county schools. Through his strong
leadership, Walt brought together industry, government and farmers to promote
the No-Till Farming program throughout the region.
Walt was instrumental in helping to organize and participate in the Fields of
Tomorrow Program sponsored by Monsanto where up to 1,500 people at one session
learned about the benefits of No-Till farming.
After Walt retired in 1991, he remained active in promoting the district owned
equipment and conservation concepts. He also assisted new County Agents with
their educational efforts on behalf of conservation. He remained active on the
Soil Conservation District Quarter of land by helping take care of the tree plot
by doing weed control and spraying for insects on the trees. He also set-up many
crop tours in Golden Valley Co. and has worked with the Experiment Station on
small grain and grass plot work on the Soil Conservation Quarter.
After retirement, Walt spent eight years with the Southwest Water Authority in
trying to bring good quality water to Southwest North Dakota. This was
accomplished.
Because of these many accomplishments as a county agent for Golden Valley County
and his continued involvement in the community after his retirement, I highly
recommend Walt Mattson for the ESP State Retirees Service Award.
