Planting Dates and Rates

Rye, 56-75 lb/A August 25 to September 15; Winter Wheat, 70-80 lb/A (about 20-24 plants/ft.2) September 1 to 15. Seeding earlier increases chances of disease and insect problems. Seeding later reduces chance of survival, generally delays maturity, increases disease chances and reduces yield potential. Rye is more winter hardy than winter wheat. Winter wheat should always be planted into stubble in Northern North Dakota. Flax seeded at 8 lb/A on fallow August 1-10 will provide adequate stubble. Flax seeded in 36"-60" wide rows provides more protection then strips. If adequate moisture exists other stubble may be used; however, wheat or barley stubble can increase changes of leaf and root diseases.
