Controlling Mustards in Winter Wheat

Flixweed and tansy mustard should be treated when they are no larger than two to three inches across or two to three inches tall. As these plants become larger control decreases dramatically. Pennycress is easier to control than tansy mustard or flixweed, and herbicide applications made before the pennycress bolts are usually very effective.

Herbicides recommended for the control of these mustard species in winter wheat along with application timings or crop stage include: 2,4-D ester or amine - tillering until just prior to boot stage MCPA ester or amine - four-leaf stage until just prior to boot stage Bromoxynil (ME4 Brominal, Buctril) - spring green up until just prior to boot stage.

Ester formulations of 2,4-D and MCPA are more effective on tansy mustard and flixweed than are amine formulations.

Most herbicides in the sulfonylurea (SU) control winter annual mustards very well. Consult the label for timing and rate information. Consult the Fungicide Control Guide at Field Crop Fungicide Guide
