Fertilize Winter Wheat Winter wheat that has survived the winter should have its yield potential and nitrogen needs examined. Apply enough N to combine with current soil N to reach your yield goal. It take 125 lbs. of N to achieve a 50 bu/acre yield goal. Apply N as soon as possible - preferably before a rain. UAN solutions are less likely to volatilize than urea, although extended dry periods following application can result in volatilization of both, with a limit of about 50% of the N in UAN, since about 1/2 the N in UAN is ammonium nitrate. If ammonium nitrate (33-0-0) is available locally, this would be the product of choice due to low volatility concerns.
