Planting Information

Rotation

Soybeans work well in a small grain rotation. Volunteer sunflower are difficult and expensive to control. Wheat performs well following soybeans.

Planting Date

Soybeans are susceptible to frost and require a long season to mature. Planting May 25 in NE North Dakota would minimize frost risk.

Plant 1 1/2" but not more than 2" deep into a firm seedbed warmed to 50 Degrees or more.

Row Width Seeding Rate Seeds Per ft.
30" 55# 9
24" 65# 7
12" 80# 4

Row Width

Plant in 30" or narrower rows. Yields increase 6-24% as row width narrows from 30" to 12".

Seed Quality

Select not more than two year old seed free of disease, seed coat cracking, and splits. When seed deterioration occurs seedling vigor declines first, then ability to establish a stand, and finally germination. Low germinating seed should therefore be discarded.
