Check for Soybean Nodulation

Soybeans that have been emerged for a couple of weeks can be inspected for nodule development. A well nodulated plant should have 5-7 healthy nodules at this time. Healthy nodules are pink inside, while ineffective ones are white or light green. The presence of several healthy nodules means the plant is fixing its own nitrogen. If fewer than 5-7 nodules are present, wait a week and check the field again. If nodule numbers have not increased and nitrogen deficiency symptoms are beginning to appear (light green appearance of the plant or yellow lower leaves) then 50-60 lbs/acre of nitrogen should be applied. If soil nitrate levels were high at planting time, then nodules may not develop and the crop should be able to obtain its nitrogen needs from the soil.
