Soybean Fertilizer Information

Inoculate all seed with soybean rhizobia bacteria. Soybean requires a specific rhizobia that is different from other legumes. Soybean residue and roots will return the amount of N used from the soil. When using peat based inoculum, damp seed or seed coated with a sticker will retain the inoculum. Because of inconsistent nodulation, fields with no soybean history should fertilization before or as a side band at planting.

*At soil N levels less than 50 lb/acre, N fertilizer up to 50 lb/acre has been shown to increase yields of soybeans in research conducted in the Red River Valley.

Fertilizer placed with the seed can cause injury. Broadcast or a band 2" to the side and 2" down is more acceptable.

Zinc deficiencies are rare in soybeans, unlike dry beans which are very sensitive.

Iron deficiency is common in soils with high free carbonate minerals and salts. Plant a resistant variety. FeEDDHA chelate is most effective on iron deficiency symptoms, but its application is expensive, considering that whole fields are not effective and the spatial nature of iron deficiency in the Valley is very small in distance.
