Sunflower Rust

The early spring sexual stage of sunflower rust is now evident on volunteer sunflowers. This stage is easily recognized on cotyledons of volunteer sunflowers. Spots are bb sized having a yellow ring around a tan-red color center. This stage produces spores that ultimately form the red spore stage that gives rust its name. Control all volunteer sunflower soon after emergence to help reduce future rust populations. This will not prevent future rust generations but will help delay spore population increases. Presently we have no labeled chemicals to control rust in sunflower.
