Cultural Practices to Reduce Sunflower Rust

Rust is a potentially serious problem in sunflower. New races appeared several year ago. They are widespread and are especially serious on many confection hybrids. The predominant races are 3, 4 and one or more unidentified races. Some hybrids have resistance to race 3, but no hybrid has resistance to race 4.

Planting hybrids with resistance to race 3 may help reduce losses provided race 4 or an unidentified race is not present. Where race 4 is present, race 3 resistance is of limited value.

Cultural practices help minimize rust. If possible, plant early. This may help the crop escape the worst of the rust infection. Control sunflower volunteers as rust can build up early on volunteers. Follow recommended planting rates, avoid high plant populations and high nitrogen rates. These practices lead to dense or succulent foliage which favor disease.

Headline fungicide is currently registered for rust control.

Avoid planting next to a field that had severe rust last year.
