Clean, Cool Grain Stores Best

Grain stored at warmer than 45 degrees Fahrenheit will require cooling. Otherwise, the temperature difference between the warm grain and subzero weather outside could cause air currents to develop, carrying warm air to the top of the bin where moisture in it can condense. Moisture will cause crusting near the center top, and warm spring weather may cause insect and molds to start at the point.

When cooling, use an aeration fan that provides at least 1/10 of a cubic foot of air per minute per bushel of bin capacity. Such a fan will require about 120 hours of operation to provide 10 to 15 degrees of temperature change. Every time the temperature drops 10 to 15 degrees, the fan will need to be operated. This means four or five cooling sessions will be required to get the grain cooled before winter.
