Weed Seeds Cause Grain Storage Concerns

Weed seeds, such as pigeon grass, will accumulate in the center of the bin, if the bin is filled without a distributor, increasing the chance for storage problems. Since weed seeds tend to be at a higher moisture content than the grain, this becomes a wet spot even if the grain is dry.

Since the weed seeds are usually smaller than the grain, there is more resistance to the airflow through this area, and airflow will go around the "pocket." When cooling grain with an aeration system, measure the temperature in the center and continue aeration until this area has been cooled.

Some of the weed seeds can be removed with a bin center unloading system. This removes some of the center core because the grain flows out in a funnel shape pattern.

Most farm moisture meters measure the dielectric property of grain. This property will be affected by foreign material in the sample. Determine the amount of meter error by comparing the moisture content of a cleaned sample with a sample that includes the foreign material.
