Chickpea Production Guide Adaptation to North Dakota: Warm-season, annual grain legume that is successfully grown in the western half of North Dakota. Adapted to arid environments with warm temperatures, long-growing seasons, and lower rainfall that reduces disease potential. Planting Date & Conditions: Late April to mid-May. Seed Types: Desi-small, light to dark, wrinkled; Kabuli-large salad-bar type. Seeding Pattern and Rates: Solid seeded. Desi types = 80 lbs/acre, Kabuli types = 120 lb/acre to establish 3-4 plants/sq ft. Kabuli types will need seed treatment for proper germination. Seeding Depth: 1.5-2 inches Fertility Requirements: Fixes nitrogen (inoculate seed with proper strain of bacteria). Fertility needs are similar to dry beans. Requires adequate phosphorus. Weed Control: Consult Extension circular W-253 for list of labeled herbicides. Use herbicides with cultural and mechanical methods of weed management. Water Use: Fairly efficient user of water (tolerates heat and dry weather). Soil Conditions: Well-drained, low-salt and fertile fields are important. Diseases: Ascochyta blight (grow tolerant varieties); Sclerotinia. (For more information on diseases see http://paridss.usask.ca/specialcrop/pulse_diseases/index.html Insects: Seed corn maggot and wireworms.
