Diseases

Bacterial Blight - Occurs in spring months during cool, wet weather. Plants recover in dry weather.

Alternaria - Occurs when heavy dew or raining period prevail during flowering and seed development. Characterized by large, brown spots on leaves and may cause head rot and drop. This is a serious disease and can cause large losses because resistance is marginal. Never plant safflower on safflower ground.

Rust - Rust is both seed and soil borne. Always treat seed for rust. Dithane and Manzate 200 give excellent rust control. Vitavax 200 has a state label for use on safflower and also gives excellent protection. Thiram gives good to excellent protection.

Sclerotinia & Botrytis - Need wet conditions at flowering. No resistance or fungicides are available to reduce damage from these two diseases
