MicroEssentials S15 Fertilizer for Canola Production

S15 is a newer fertilizer formulation being produced by Cargill Crop Nutrition brand name of MicroEssentials.  Simplot Growers Solutions is currently distributing S15 in ND.  The S15 formulation is a blend of Mono-ammonium Phosphate, 11+52+0 (MAP), Ammonium Sulfate, 21+0+0+24S (AS) and Elemental Sulfur, 0+0+90 (ES) to give a nutrient concentration of 13+33+0+15S.  The sulfur in S15 is half AS and half ES.  S15 offers the convenience of having the P and S in the same pellet with a relatively low concentration on N.  This makes it a good choice for air seeder application.

All fertilizer was broadcast and pre-plant incorporated then packed and seeded with a double disk drill

Soil Test N and S are for 0-24 inches, the P, K, OM and pH are for 0-6 inch soil zone

S-15 $300/ton, MAP $180/ton, AS $180/ton, Elemental $300/ton, Urea $250/ton

Gross Return uses a $0.10/lb canola price

Canola S and P experiments were conducted at Langdon in 2001 thru 2003.  A spring soil test was done before fertilization and planting.  All fertilizers for the data shown were weighed, mixed and applied with a research cone seeder.  The plots were then roto-tilled three inches deep and packed before planting.  Seeding was with a double disk drill in six inch row spacing. InVigor 2663LL was planted in 2001, Hyola 357RR in 2002 and Hyola 357 Magnum RR in 2003.  Stands were 8 to 12 plants/ft2 in all experiments.  Weed control was excellent and the disease infection low in all experiments.

No statistically significant difference was found for yields of canola with S15 fertilizer compared to an equal blend of MAP, AS and ES.  The average of four experiments showed a 66 lb/a yield advantage for S15 compared to the blend.  At current canola and fertilizer prices the 66 lb/a yield increase would calculate to $1.50/ acre increase in profit due to using the S15 fertilizer.
