Canada Thistle Control in Pastures

Banvel, 2,4-D, or Tordon may be used for Canada thistle control in pastures. The most economical treatments for large areas of infestation include Banvel at 1 pt/A, 2,4-D at 1 to 2 qt/A of or Tordon 1 pt/A. These treatments will provide short-term control, but annual retreatment will be necessary for several years to obtain satisfactory long-term control. Control is better when these herbicides are applied to Canada thistle at the early-bud growth stage (early summer) or in the fall when plants have 12 or more inches of regrowth. Tordon at 1 to 2 qt/A will provide near complete control for several years, but is an expensive treatment and at least one retreatment will still be necessary for long-term control. Patches of Canada thistle can be controlled with Banvel at 4 qt/A or Tordon 2 qt/A before the infestation expands and becomes costly to control. Grazing restrictions vary with herbicide and rate so read the label carefully before using.
