Canada Thistle Control in Small Grains

Canada thistle growing in small grain crops may be treated with herbicides for in crop suppression and control. 3-way treatments of Harmony Extra or Express + 2,4-D + Banvel have given good to excellent season long control.

Small grain pre-harvest and post-harvest treatments with Roundup Ultra will also give good Canada thistle control depending on environmental conditions and stage of the plant at application. Retreatment the next year will be necessary for long-term Canada thistle control. The following is NDSU data from 1996-1997 which shows Canada thistle control one year after treatment in wheat. Jointing treatments were applied when Canada thistle was 4 to 6 inches tall and pre-harvest treatments were applied to 8 to 12 inch tall and blooming Canada thistle. Post-harvest treatments were applied to rosette to 4 to 5 inch tall thistle.
