Calibrate Your Sprayer

With post emergence crop spraying season close at hand it's important to calibrate your field sprayer. Surveys indicate most applicators are over or under applying pesticides.

The major concern of calibration is putting the proper amount of chemical per acre but that is only a part of a good sprayer calibration procedure. A good calibration procedure should include measurement and adjustment if needed of the following items.

1. Pump volume (make sure pump can put gallons required).
2. Boom end pressure (a drop indicates a problem with pump or lines).
3. Nozzles spacing (affects boom height and nozzle selection).
4. Individual nozzle output (should not vary more than 10% from expected).
5. Boom height (varies with nozzle output angle).
6. Spray pattern (no streaking visible).
7. Travel Speed
8. Total sprayer output
