Storage of Field Peas You can store peas safely under 16% moisture. However, when delivering peas most firms require moisture under 14%. Peas dry down easily in aeration bins. Aeration is the best method for drying peas to minimize splitting or cracking. If peas are dried using heat, it is best to dry them very slowly at no more than 71 C (160 F) to prevent the seed coat from separating from the inside of the pea, and so as not to affect the ability of the pea to germinate. Augering peas can cause damage. It is best to keep your auger as full as possible. Sometimes, augering with your most worn auger works best to keep splitting or cracking to a minimum. In any case it is best to try various augers, if there is a choice, to see which one causes the least amount of damage. Steel flighted grain augers are the most commonly used on farms, but other kinds of augers are more suitable for peas, including augers with bristle fighting, or those with a conveyor or a belt system. Peas are best stored in a short bin, as a long drop will cause further cracking. Back to Peas Menu
