Planting Oats Oats average 15,000 seeds per lb. Seeding oats at 2-2 1/2 bushels per acre results in 28 seeds per square foot. Oats should be planted early, especially rust susceptible varieties. When planting after May 15 rust susceptible varieties are subject to severe leaf and stem rust, reducing yields severely. Leaf rust can occur on commonly grown varieties. Oats are susceptible to hot weather during flowering. Florets abort easily, a condition called blasting. Seeding May 1 - May 15 will help avoid flowering during hot weather. Back to Oats Menu |
