Oats Fertilization

Traditionally oats has been considered a minor crop in northeast North Dakota, as a result it has not been fertilized to obtain economic high yields. Oats respond well to our essential soil nutrients of nitrogen and phosphorous. Fertilizer requirement for a 90 bushel/acre oat crop is similar to a 50 bushel/acre wheat crop, requiring about 125 pounds of total nitrogen and 25-30 pounds of broadcast phosphorous on medium testing soils. High moisture years and excessively high fertility can cause lodging in oats. Fertilize according to soil test results.
