"Paul" Naked Oat Production and Utilization Naked or hull-less oat can be defined as varieties of oat with hulls that are loosely attached to the groat which at harvest, thresh free from the groat. The hull is relatively low in metabolizable energy, and reduces the value of whole oat in feeds requiring high energy content. Removing the hull, results in a feedstuff that is higher in metabolizable energy than corn. Since the hull usually accounts for about 25 to 30 percent of the mass of conventional oats, in markets where the hull is not utilized, naked oat should result in a gain efficiency of 25-30% for transportation, storage, handling and in feeding.
