Planting Naked Oat Research suggests the optimum seeding rate for naked oat is one million live seeds per acre. The variety Paul has approximately 16,000 to 20,000 seeds per pound with 18,000 being average. Therefore, a seeding rate of 55 to 60 pounds of live seed per acre is recommended. Paul typically is slightly lower in germination than conventional oat and the seeding rate should always be adjusted for the germination percentage of the seed lot. The grain drill calibration table for rye is often used for the initial setting for naked oats. Naked oat is vulnerable to seed and soil borne pathogens. Problems with emergence can occur, especially when seeded into cool, wet soils. Seed treatment is recommended to help avoid emergence problems. Deep planting should also be avoided.
