Naked Oat Use For Feed

Chemical analysis and limited feeding trials indicated naked oat is a valuable livestock feed. Paul oat has unique compositional qualities when compared to other common feeds. It is low in fiber and significantly higher in protein than other grains. It is also high in fat content resulting in very high energy values. These characteristics should make it useful feed for inclusion in nutrient dense rations and supplements, with the potential to substitute for high energy grains as corn and some portion of protein supplements as soybean oil meal.

Preliminary feeding trials suggest Paul oat results in greater daily gains and feed efficiency when fed to feeder calves in place of barley. It appears naked oat should be processed by coarse grinding or rolling for cattle. Due to its high fat content, rancidity may be a problem in stored processed grain. As a very high energy feed, it is assumed careful management is needed in starting cattle on and feeding high amounts of naked oat to avoid digestive disturbances. Naked oat has been suggested as suitable to increase the energy density in rations for high producing dairy cattle. Calculations project naked oat will be worth 11% more than barley in dairy cow rations.

In swine weaning and finishing trials, Paul oat was substituted for corn at varying levels with no effect on performance and a slight improvement in feed efficiency in finishing rations. Due to its high crude protein content and favorable profile of the amino acids arginine, lysine and threoine, naked oat rations can be formulated to meet protein requirements with significantly less supplementation than corn rations. There is an indication backfat may increase and percent muscle decrease in carcasses of hogs finished on naked oat due to its high energy content.

More specific feeding recommendations regarding usage and feeding limitations will be determined through ongoing feeding trials.
