Foxtail Control in Oat

Foxtail control options are limited in oat. Use of a harrow or rotary hoe for foxtail control is limited to a pre-emergence tillage operation. The shallow tillage should be used about three to five days after oat planting before the emerging shoot (coleoptile) is near the soil surface. While post-emergence tillage with a harrow or rotary hoe is useful for early-season weed control in wheat or barley, it is not recommended in oat due to potential for excessive stand loss.

The only post-emergence herbicide labeled in oat for foxtail control is Stampede 80EDF. Oat needs to be in the 2- to 4-leaf stage and foxtail in the 1- to 4-leaf stage when using Stampede. The majority of green and yellow foxtail should be in the 2- to 3-leaf stage for optimum control. The labeled rate of Stampede is 1.25 to 1.4 pounds per acre. MCPA ester at 0.5 pint (4 pound per gallon concentrate) and an oil additive at 1 pint per acre must to be tankmixed with Stampede. Temporary oat leaf yellowing or tip browning can be expected several days after application. Do not apply Stampede at temperatures above 85 degrees. See the label for other instructions and precautions.
