Direct Seeding for Hay

Using herbicides for weed control allows seeding in May and harvest in late July-early August. One to 1.5 tons of forage can be obtained in seedling year from the 1st cut. A second cut if obtained will give an additional 1 ton. Herbicides are necessary to maximize hay yields and nitrogen fixation in year of establishment. Refer to the current NDSU Extension Service circulars, 253 and herbicide labels.
